Hello, I am Deanna and I consider myself a student of Financial Independence (FI). At the birth of this blog I am 45 years old and a bit of a late gamer. My story is a messy one, but it is filled with transformative hope. I had always lacked discipline with money but things got epically bad when, in my 30’s, I found myself in the throes of addiction/alcoholism.
In my darkest hour, I had a vision where I saw three paths. On the first path, I saw myself rocking back and forth in an insane asylum and I knew if I kept doing what I was doing this is where I was headed. On the second path, I saw complete darkness and recognized this choice to be death. Then on the third path, I saw a tiny glimmer of light and knew this to be God.
Everything in my life changed that day when I chose the third path. I returned to a faith in Jesus Christ and embarked on a journey of recovery. Today I get to use my experiences to help other women find the same level of freedom.
Above The Line
Since late 2009 I have been doing the hard work that comes with recovery and in mid-2014 I became ready to work on my finances. I employed the Dave Ramsey debt snowball method to dig my way out of debt. On December 29, 2017, I made my final student loan payment and became 100% debt free for the first time in 23 years!! I am excited to be on the other side of the equation and living/writing about personal finance, investing, tax optimization, career hacking, travel hacking, life hacking and the overall mind-shift that comes with being above the line.
I discovered FI through the ChooseFI podcast in the Spring of 2017 and knew instantly that it fit into my life’s mission. This blog will chronicle my journey to Financial Independence and the dichotomous changes I have undergone. If you can’t get enough, I also write over at ChooseFI. My hope is that, through reading my stories, you will be inspired to know it’s never too late.
